    Neighborhood Vibes

The University District is a walkable mix of university life, food and nature, according to Seeing Washington's guide. It has student energy during the academic year and a calmer pace in summer, and campus, shops and restaurants sit close together. University Way NE, known as The Ave, is the neighborhood's main street, with vintage shops, independent bookstores and ethnic restaurants. The University Book Store has operated there since 1900, per the guide, and cheap eats include Thai Tom and late-night sausages at Shultzy's.

Campus is the other draw. The Burke Museum is Washington's natural history museum, Suzzallo Library has a Collegiate Gothic reading room, and 86 Yoshino cherry trees on the Quad bloom from late March to early April. University Village, an outdoor shopping center with more than 110 stores and restaurants, is nearby. Ravenna Park, Cowen Park and the Union Bay Natural Area offer green space within a short trip.

Living or staying here means student-town energy. Expect crowds and noise near The Ave on weekend nights, and quieter streets in summer. Prices and availability swing with the academic calendar, so check dates for graduation, move-in and football weekends.
