All SeaTac Airport rental companies operate from one consolidated Rental Car Facility with a free 24-hour shuttle ride from the airport terminal. Plan on a 5 to 10 minute shuttle ride, a counter or kiosk stop and a valid license, card and minimum age of 21 for most companies.

You step off the plane, grab your bag and realize the rental cars are not in the terminal. That is the first surprise at SeaTac. Eleven companies share one facility about a mile north of the airport, and every renter takes the same shuttle to get there.

This guide covers five companies we picked for name recognition and clear published rules: Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, National and Alamo. It also walks through booking, getting to the facility, what to expect at the counter and how to return the car. It does not cover every company or every vehicle class, and prices change by date, so we do not list rates.

    Five Companies to Know

Prices and policies change, so confirm everything on the company's own site before you book.

    Enterprise

Enterprise lists its SeaTac location at 3150 S 160th St, Suite 508. Counter hours are daily from 5 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.. Self-service kiosks are also available.

    • Phone: 1-833-329-8464
    • Age: renters and additional drivers must be 21 or older. Ages 21 to 24 pay a $25 per day surcharge and are limited to certain vehicle classes
    • Debit cards: accepted at the airport only with a ticketed return travel itinerary, and the license name and address must match the renter's current home address
    • No return ticket: a $300 deposit applies, or $850 for certain luxury and performance vehicles, paid by an accepted card

    Hertz

Hertz operates from the same facility. A rental-age guide lists a minimum age of 20 and a young renter fee of $19 a day at most locations, though the same guide's FAQ gives $29, so confirm the number when you book.

    • Age: 20 and up at most locations, with a young renter fee
    • Worth knowing: confirm the age and fee for the SeaTac location before you rely on them

    Avis

Avis lists a minimum age of 21 and a young renter fee of $27 a day for drivers 21 to 24 in the age guide we used.

    • Age: 21, with a fee under 25

    National

National lists a minimum age of 21 and an average young renter fee of about $25 a day.

    • Age: 21, with a fee under 25

    Alamo

Alamo lists a minimum age of 21 and an average young renter fee of about $25 a day.

    • Age: 21, with a fee under 25

By the Numbers: 11 rental companies share 1 facility and 1 shuttle system. Under-25 fees on this list run from about $19 to $27 per day, according to one age guide, so a four-day rental can add $76 to $108.

The other companies at the facility are Budget, Dollar, Fox, Payless, Sixt and Thrifty.

How to Book, Step by Step

    1. Pick your dates and pickup location. Choose "Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)." Book early if you are traveling in summer, on a cruise weekend or over a holiday.
    2. Compare at least three companies. Look at the total price, not the daily rate. Include taxes, airport fees and the young renter fee if it applies.
    3. Check the fine print. Look at the cancellation policy, mileage limits, fuel policy and any extra driver fee.
    4. Check your age and payment rules. Under 25, expect a daily fee. If you plan to rent a car at SeaTac with a debit card, read the debit card rules first. Some companies need a return ticket or a deposit.
    5. Enter your driver details exactly as they appear on your license. The name must match your license and payment card.
    6. Save the confirmation number. Keep it on your phone along with the company's phone number.
    7. Check your insurance. Ask your auto insurer and credit card issuer what they cover before you pay for the company's coverage.

    What to Bring

    • A valid, unexpired, government-issued photo driver's license. Enterprise says it does not accept digital licenses, photocopies or learner's permits.
    • A major credit card in the renter's name. Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover are accepted at Enterprise.
    • Your confirmation number.
    • An International Driving Permit if your license is not in English, depending on the company's rules.
    • Proof of a return ticket if you plan to use a debit card.

How to Get to the SeaTac Rental Car Facility

    /

    1. Collect your bags at baggage claim.
    2. Look for "Rental Car Shuttles" signs outside baggage claim. Enterprise's directions say to exit the sliding glass doors near Carousel 1 or 15.
    3. Walk to a shuttle stop. Pickup zones are at the north and south ends of the main terminal.
    4. Board the free SeaTac rental car shuttle. It runs 24 hours a day. The ride is about 5 to 7 minutes according to Enterprise and 5 to 10 minutes including wait according to a regional tourism site.
    5. Get off at the Rental Car Facility at 3150 S 160th St and go to your company's counter or kiosk.

Local Tip: Enterprise warns that ongoing construction can slow travel to and from the facility. Give yourself extra time, especially before a flight.

What to Expect at the Counter

    • A short line or a kiosk. Some companies offer self-service kiosks. Expect to show your license and payment card.
    • An offer for extras. You may be asked about insurance, fuel and upgrades. You can decline anything you do not need.
    • A deposit. Some renters, including those without a ticketed return itinerary, pay a deposit on a card.
    • A walk-around. Check the car for damage and take photos before you leave.
    • Then you drive. Ask the staff how to exit the garage and which signs to follow.

    How to Return the Car

    1. Take SR 518 and follow the signs for the Rental Car Facility.
    2. Follow your company's signs and park in the designated return area.
    3. Let staff check the car in. Take your belongings and your receipt.
    4. Take the free shuttle back to the terminal for departures. Allow extra time for the return and the shuttle ride before your flight.

Do You Need a Rental Car?

A car makes sense for day trips to Mount Rainier, the Olympic Peninsula or a long hike. If you are staying downtown, you likely do not need one. See our guide to getting from SeaTac to downtown Seattle, and our guide to cheap parking in downtown Seattle if you do rent.
